Senior guard JT Yoho sank his first 11 field goal attempts and recorded a career-high 31 points against Detroit on Sunday, Jan. 31, but Wright State men’s basketball team dropped their second straight game, 75-68.
“Lets not act like the sky is falling,” head coach Billy Donlon said. “We’ve got to remember that we’ve played 10 conference games and we’ve won seven of them.”
Freshman guard Mark Hughes made a lay-up with 3:22 remaining to cut the deficit to two points and on the next possession found Yoho on a back-door cut to the basket, to tie the game at 63 with 3:22 remaining. Yoho made a free-throw with 2:34 remaining to give the Raiders a one-point advantage but the Titans finished strong with a 12-4 run.
“We couldn’t get any critical stops when it was a one-possession-game and we were on defense,” Donlon said.
Anton Wilson sank five three-pointers and led the Titans with 18 points off of the bench, followed by forward Jaleel Hogan with 13 points. Sophomore guard Mark Alstork finished with 13 for WSU.
“We had a really hard time guarding the bounce and Detroit really exposed it in the second half,” Donlon said.
Sophomore guard Grant Benzinger sank two early three-pointers as the Raiders led 8-0 after 1:31.
The Titans responded with a 9-2 run in the next 3:02 to as Hogan made a jumper with 6:39 remaining to cut the deficit to four points at 26-22. The Raiders fired back with a 9-3 run over the next 4:30 but four straight points by Josh McFolley made the halftime score 35-29.
Yoho recorded 17 points in the first half and continued to find success with a layup in the first 12 seconds of the second half.
Hogan drained a basket, then back-to-back three-pointers by Wilson tied the game at 37 with 16:26 remaining. The game would be tied again at 49 with 9:23 left, then at 63 with 3:22 remaining.
Wright State (13-10; Horizon 7-3) will look to bounce back as they host Milwaukee (15-7; 6-3) at the Nutter Center on Thursday, Feb. 4. Tip-off at 7 p.m.
