Baseball wins their home opener

The Wright State baseball team emerged victorious in their home opener at Nischwitz Stadium as they defeated the Xavier Musketeers in a 4-1 contest.

The Raiders were the first team on the scoreboard, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Junior Mitch Roman singled to reach base, then advanced on a wild pitch. Senior Ryan Fucci connected for a base-hit to advance Roman to third and sophomore Gabe Snyder drove in Roman and advanced Fucci to third base, to put WSU up 1-0. Fucci scored when freshman Peyton Burdick hit into a sacrifice fly to score Fucci adding on to the lead, 2-0.

The Raiders put up another run in the bottom of the third when Snyder reached base again and was knocked in when sophomore Matt Morrow flied out to left field to grow the WSU lead to 3-0.

Xavier scored their first and only run in the top of the fourth inning when senior Dan Rizzie got on base and was singled in by junior Joe Gellenbeck to cut the Raider deficit to 3-1.

Wright State added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Burdick singled down the left field line to score Roman to make it a 4-1 game, which is right where it would stand.

Junior Mark Meyer was credited with the win to improve his record to 3-1 and senior Jack Van Horn came in and saved his third game of the season.

The Raiders (7-6) will be back in action this Friday, Mar. 11 as they take on the Dayton Flyers (2-8) at Woerner Field at Time Warner Cable Stadium at 3 p.m.
