The Wright State golf team tied for fifth place out of 12 in the Bobby Nichols intercollegiate at Sevierville Golf Club in Sevierville, TN during a three-round tournament ending on Tuesday, March 22.
“It was a challenging golf course,” junior Austin Sipe said. “A couple of the par threes were pretty strong and there were a few holes that required a demanding tee shot.”
Preston French and Jared Grosser of Murray State took first and second place as French shot a 213 and Grosser two strokes more, while leading their team to a second place finish.
The Raiders finished 21 strokes off of the lead as Western Kentcky shot a total of 876, while Blake Smith tied the lowest round of the tournament with a 67 in the first round. After three rounds, Smith finished tied for fourth overall; two strokes ahead of the Raiders best individual-team score of 220 by senior Cody Nickson.
Nickson tied for 11th place as he posted a low round of 72 in the first round, followed by a 73 and 75.
Junior Ryan Wenzler and senior Conner Lash also shot 72’s in the first round for their low-rounds of the tournament, while junior Austin Sipe posted a score just one stroke behind.
Wenzler tied for 14th as he finished one stroke behind Nickson with a 75 in round two and 74 in the third.
Lash shot a 228 while freshman Alec Velasco posted a low round of 72 in the third round for a total of 237 with Sipe one stroke behind at 238.
As an individual competitor, junior Chris Rossi shot a 232 with a pair of 78’s and a 76 in the second round for a tied finish in 48th place.
The Raiders will be back in action at the Miami Valley Golf Club on Monday, April 4 as they host the Wright State Intercollegiate.
