Softball struggles at Woo Pig Classic

Wright State’s softball team picked up an 8-4 victory against Buffalo, but dropped four of five games over the weekend of Friday, Mar. 4 as they traveled to Arkansas for the Woo Pig Classic.

The Raiders (8-12) had won five straight games before riding a two-game losing streak into the classic where they faced Buffalo (4-8) and Arkansas (11-9) twice and Northern Iowa (12-5) once.

First up was a tight-game with Buffalo as the teams battled in extra innings.  WSU fell behind 5-4 headed into the bottom of the eighth inning, before Savanna Brown crossed the plate after Macey Gunther reached base on a fielders-choice to tie the game.  The Bulls scored three runs on three hits in the ninth inning and held on for an 8-7 victory despite the Raiders scoring two runs in the ninth while leaving two runners on base.

The WSU losing streak extended to four games as Chelsea Ross pitched seven innings of three-hit baseball for Northern Iowa in the second game of a double-header.  The Panthers scored all five of their runs in the third inning after a pair of homeruns by Ross and Kristin Lock for a 5-0 victory.

Right fielder Honnah Sursor collected four hits during five plate appearances against Buffalo on Saturday, as her two runs-batted-in assisted an 8-4 victory for the Raiders.  Ally Russell pitched a complete game while giving up four runs (three earned) for WSU to collect her third win of the season.

The Raiders ended the classic with back-to-back losses to Arkansas as Molli Grace pitched a complete game for the Razorbacks on Saturday while only giving up two runs on three hits.  WSU fell behind 4-0 in the first two innings and cut the deficit to two in the fifth inning, but fell 6-2.

After pitching five innings of scoreless softball in the second game against Arkansas on Sunday, Montana Wear picked up her fifth loss of the season (1-0). The Razorbacks scored the lone run of the game in the bottom half of the seventh inning, after an unearned run crossed the plate for a walk-off win.

Wright State travels to Indiana on Saturday, Mar. 19 for the Hoosier Classic.
