Wright State softball won their third straight game as they defeated the University of Dayton 8-0 at the WSU Softball Field on Wednesday, March 23 in their 2016 home-opener.
The Raiders defeated the Flyers in back-to-back days as they won 2-0 at UD on Tuesday. Sophomore Ashley Sharp pitched a complete game; only giving up two hits and no walks in the process. Right fielder Aspyn Novak collected both of Dayton’s hits in three plate appearances.
WSU posted the only runs in the game in the fifth inning after sophomore Ashton Salyers began the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Junior second baseman Libby Pfeffer reached base after a throwing error by the catcher; advancing Salyers to third, before scoring on a bunt by junior first baseman Alexis Mayle. Pfeffer scored on a RBI single by sophomore Honnah Sursor.
The solid pitching continued for WSU on Wednesday as freshman Ally Rusell only gave up one hit in three innings of work, while senior Montana Wear gave up two hits in as many innings.
The Raiders got right to work with three runs in the first and second innings. Sursor got things started as she reached on a throwing error after a bunt, then scored on another throwing error after junior catcher Vivi Marquez hit a ground ball to third. Marquez scored on a sacrifice fly by junior short stop Becka Peterson, then Pfeffer doubled to left center to knock Floyd in for a 3-0 lead.
After Floyd walked on four straight pitches to plate Sursor, a double by Gunther plated Peterson and Marquez to put WSU up 6-0 after two.
