Sophomore guard Grant Benziner requested and was granted his release by Wright State on Wednesday, April 6.
Benzinger recorded a team-high 62 three-pointers last season and averaged 9.1 points per game his freshman season as he was named to the Horizon League Newcomer Team.
After the firing of head coach Billy Donlon and with five seniors leaving the team due to graduation, there appears to be much opportunity for Benzinger to shine at WSU.
Amongst potential returning players, he averaged a second-best, 7.6 points per game last season trailing sophomore guard Mark Alstork who averaged the second highest average on the team with 12.4 ppg.
Benzinger made an appearance on ESPN's home page on Jan. 22 as he nailed a 70 foot buzzer beater at halftime from three-quarters length of the court. The shot assisted a Raiders upset over Valparaiso at the Nutter Center as they took a first place lead in the Horizon League.
He recorded a career high 31 points against Oakland in Feb. 2015 and made at least three, three-pointers in 11 games last season.
After his press conference on Tuesday, April 5, new head coach Scott Nagy said, "We need to be able to take the young men that are here now, add to it a little bit and hopefully we can put a team on the floor that can compete next year."
Although Benzinger has been granted his release, it does not confirm that he will not be playing in a Raiders uniform next season. Only time will tell.
