5 July 4 festivals with more than fireworks

Watching a bright and loud fireworks display is tradition for many people when celebrating July 4. If you are looking for events that offer more than just a fireworks show, check out these festivals.

Star-Spangled Heights

Star-Spangled Heights takes place in Thomas A. Cloud Park on Brandt Pike in Huber Heights. In the morning, people can watch a parade at 10 a.m. Then, at noon, you can join in the celebration complete with food, music, and activities for the whole family. This celebration starts the fireworks show at 10 p.m.

Lights in Flight Festival

This festival starts Sunday, July 3 at 1 p.m. in downtown Dayton at the RiverScape MetroPark. It is free and open to the public. There will be food vendors, live music and, the main event, a fireworks show at 10 p.m. later that evening. If you tune your radio to Hot 102.9 FM, you can see your fireworks synchronized with music.

Fairborn Independence Day Festival

Join the City of Fairborn for a family block party on July 3 from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. to enjoy music, rides and food on Main street in downtown Fairborn. Then come back on Monday, July 4 at 10 a.m. for the July 4 parade, and later that day for entertainment at 5 p.m. and fireworks at 10 p.m. in the community park.

Red, White and Boonshoft

The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery is celebrating July 4 in an unusual way. You can see an indoor fireworks display in the Planetarium on Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will also be food vendors, entertainment and educational shows held both inside and outside. Admission is $14.50 for adults, $12.50 for seniors, $11.50 for children and free for museum members and children under three.

Centerville - Washington Township Americana Festival

In downtown Centerville near Main street on July 4 is the Centerville-Washington Township Americana Festival. Here, patrons can compete in a 5k run and walk, watch a parade at 10 a.m. and peruse craft and food booths at the street fair from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. At the Centerville High School Stadium at 500 E. Franklin street, there will be fireworks at 10 p.m. Gates will open at 6 p.m. and there will be entertainment at 8 p.m. with a performance from Ticket to Ride, a Beatles cover band.
