The sun is coming out more frequently, and sunburn is an increasing risk as summer draws closer. Here are some tips to keep your skin sun safe.
Wear the right sunscreen
The first thing anyone will say when you start talking about sun protection. However, not all sunscreen is created equal. The American Academy of Dermatologists recommends wearing sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection, is water resistant and has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Applying one ounce, or enough to fill a shot glass, will offer enough protection to cover all exposed areas of the body. It is also recommended to apply sunscreen 15 minutes before stepping outside, and reapply every two hours after, or after swimming or sweating.
Wear protective clothing
Wearing the right type of clothing will keep your skin healthy as well. Wearing clothes with tightly-woven fabric helps to block UV rays, and the more vivid the color, the more protection you will get out of it. Vivid colors block more UV rays than pale colors.
Use the right accessories
Umbrellas are a beach necessity. Having a little shade to take a break from the sun is a great help, but it is smart to couple that with sunscreen or protective clothing. Also, when choosing hats, wear wide brimmed hats to shade your face and head.
Plan your activities
There’s more sun out in the summer, and it is at its strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you are planning any outdoor activities, it would be best to do them earlier in the morning or later in the evening to keep your skin healthy.
