Apartments vs dorms: what you need to know

When choosing where to live on campus, there is a wide selection of residential situations to choose from.

Between Hamilton Hall, Honors Hall, The Woods, College Park Apartments, Forest Lane Apartments, University Park Apartments and The Village Apartments, there are several options.

Providing different roommate situations and kitchen or bathroom setups, dormitories and apartments are two quite different choices.

Considering the variances, could one argue that one is better than the other?

Sophomore Franky Piña lived in Hawthorne Hall as a part of The Woods as a freshman and now resides in the second floor of Senadoah in the College Park Apartments. His current living situation consists of a four-bedroom apartment with a full kitchen and two full bathrooms.

When asked about his experience in Hawthorne Hall, Piña shared that he enjoyed experiencing dorm life and meeting new people while being close to campus. He decided to make the switch to living in College Park.

“It was cheaper and to get away from the dorms and get farther away from the actual campus," Piña said.

He added that living in these apartments “gives you a nice transition as to what actual apartments are and there’s less noise. Therefore, he believes “apartments are better because they make me feel like I’m more on my own and don’t have as much to do with campus.”

Piña recommends the College Park Apartments, and will probably live there next year, but also believes dormitories have nice features, especially for incoming freshman.

“Living in a dorm your freshman year exposes you to new people and I was able to meet a lot of my really good friends that I see every day.”

On the other hand, having his own room, he feels the apartment helps him get away and focus academically.
