Player Spotlight: Emily Vogelpohl

Emily Vogelpohl is a key member of the Wright State women’s basketball team. During last year’s historic season, she was among the team leaders in points, assists and minutes. Vogelpohl is from Cincinnati, Ohio and went to Mcauley High School. Her play at Mcauley got her offers from schools like Kent State and Northern Kentucky University. She chose Wright State because of her desire to play close to home and in a familiar scheme.“I chose WSU because of location," she said. “Being only an hour from Cincinnati, I can go home whenever I can. I’m a huge family person, and I love hanging out with my grandma. WSU allowed me to be close to them. Also, the coaching staff is awesome, and the offense we run really fit with my style of play."Vogelpohl has had significant playing time ever since she stepped on campus in 2015. Her freshman year saw her finish top five on the team in minutes and points per game. She improved on those numbers during last season, and helped the team reach the NIT postseason tournament.

She has also dealt with a couple of injuries throughout her career at WSU. At the end of her freshman year she fractured her tibia, which required rehab over the offseason. She also had shoulder surgery this past summer.“The injury my freshman year messed me up a bit," she said. “But after that, I went through rehab and got back for my sophomore year. On July 14th I had shoulder surgery and coach Merriweather planned on redshirting me for this season, but I was able to recover fast enough to play. Getting through the injuries was tough, but I just worked hard one day at a time."Vogelpohl is an early childhood education major at Wright State, but her number one goal is to coach basketball at the college level.

“My ultimate dream is to become a coach at the college level. If that doesn’t work out, I’d love to be a teacher."

Fun FactsVogelpohl enjoys cooking, working out and being with her family. She has three siblings who all play sports. Her favorite holiday is thanksgiving, and when it comes to ice cream she prefers her hometown favorite, Graeter’s.

She chose number three for her uniform because of her family.“Growing up I always wore the number 25 or the number 3. At WSU 25 was taken, so I chose three," Vogepohl said. "All of my siblings wear three for their uniforms too, so it’s something that runs in the family."
