‘Tis the season for not only holiday cheer, but also giving back. If you want to give back this year, there are ways you can do just that on our own campus.Give back to children all around the world this Christmas with Operation Christmas Child. Help a child in need by filling a box with items decided by Samaritan's Purse, the creators of this project, to be the best for these children.
Timri Nolte, director of academic affairs in SGA, said she mentioned the organization to SGA and they were incredibly supportive. “Students can donate by filling a shoebox with school supplies, clothing, books, toys and other non-perishable items or they can donate cash and we will create a box. We will send photos of the filled boxes to those individuals who gives us cash so they can see their gift before it is shipped,” Nolte said. The event will continue until November 20, so there is still time to donate. If you are not sure where to start, Nolte said Dollar Tree and Five Below items are welcome in these boxes.
“This does not have to be an expensive gift. Once you fill a shoebox, tape it up and drop it off in our Dropbox right in front of the SGA office,” she said.Nolte said thousands of volunteers are in charge of preparing these boxes to be shipped to children. “These shoeboxes will go to over 100 different countries to children-in-need during the holidays,” she said.Contact timri.nolte@wsusg.com or beth.metcalf@wsusg.com or visit the Samaritan’s Purse website with any questions or for more information. If you don’t want to go out and buy things and want to give back to our very own students, there is currently a clothing drive going on through the end of the semester in the Rainbow Office. “Some of my co-executive board members and our interns suggested the idea after seeing many students on campus without proper winter clothing,” Rainbow Alliance vice president Ariel Ya'akov Berry said.Bring clothing you no longer need to the Rainbow Office in the SU Atrium at B029D and a log will be compiled to keep track of what items have been donated so Rainbow Alliance members can get the items they need.
Only clothing donations are being accepted and they ask that no undergarments be included in a donation.
