Change is a process, and that is something that Holley Mapel knows a lot about.
Mapel who is a 20-year-old junior marketing major, and vice president of the Student Government Association, who hopes to one day work in the nonprofit sector.
As vice president of the SGA, Mapel’s job consists of working with all the senators that represent each college on campus, as well as with residential and commuter students. She also serves on the executive board which focuses on campus wide initiatives, and serves alongside the president for student representation.
Mapel has been involved in student government for two years now, and has held the position of vice president since March of last semester. She refers to the job as time consuming, but something she really enjoys.
“I joined student government because I saw it as a great opportunity to give back to the university and to use my passion and skill sets to make the campus better for our students," Mapel said.
She is involved in Cru-an international interdenominational Christian organization, The Nonprofit Leadership Alliance, The Association of Fundraising Professionals and the International Friendship Incorporated, which is an opportunity for a community of American and international students to come together for conversation.
In addition to attending about fifteen meetings in a week on average, Mapel refers to her schedule as being very full, not just busy, but full of life.
This year the Student Government Association is interested in creating systemic changes, university wide changes that will be institutionalized and sustainable for the following years, but it all starts with people wanting to get involved.
“There is truly room for any student wanting to use their skill set and passion to serve the university. The Student Government Association has provided that avenue for myself, and I have seen it transform the lives of others that I work with as well," Mapel said.
