Raiders of Wright State: Megan Lawson

"Just keep swimming" is the mantra 18 year-old Megan Lawson takes to heart, and has been using since she first learned to swim at the age of three.

Lawson is a freshman on the swim team, and is majoring in mechanical engineering.

She has been swimming for six years now, and never expected to be competing at the college level.

“It was kind of like a secret goal of mine that I would get noticed by the coach," Lawson said. "I thought that it would happen a lot later, and not a month into school."

She attends swim practice six days a week, and is involved in Chi Alpha --  a religious group on campus.

Lawson refers to swimming competitively as a mental process, which she prepares for by getting in the right mindset and staying focused on the goal she wants to meet. She also likes to wear her lucky socks, and bring her lucky towels -- just in case.

“Swimming and I are in a love-hate relationship, but mostly love," Lawson said. "I have always really enjoyed the water, and I am kind of in my own environment when I am in there. I can’t really explain how it makes me feel, but the feeling is mostly love."

Swimming at the college level can be a lifestyle change, but she is grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the swim team since this is the last year for the team due to recent budget cuts.
