Wright State’s club hockey team is looking to improve their game.
“Record wise, we have not been as good as we would have like,” hockey coach Rick Szabo said.
The main reason for losses is that the team has been plagued with injuries since the beginning of the season, according to Szabo. This has led to them having to roll with only two lines and four defensemen compared to some teams that are able to have three or four lines and six defensemen.“When you are shorthanded player wise, it is very difficult for them to sustain the level of success throughout a whole game,” Szabo said.Even though they won their first game of the season, that win did not translate into a season of success, according to Szabo. Despite the record, Szabo likes the way the time has been playing. “I am really proud of their effort considering that they are at a disadvantage,” he said.
They have been playing decent on the powerplay and 5-on-5, but needs to improve their penalty kill, according to Szabo.According to the team’s website, their wins have come on the road against Denison and Cleveland State. However, the team’s best game of the season came against Dayton, according to Szabo. It resulted in a 5-4 loss at the Kettering Rec Center on October 14, according to the team’s website.
When Szabo evaluates the team, he does not look at the record, but rather at the compete level against the other team. “We had the lead a couple of times and we played really well and we competed really well,” Szabo said. Some of the leading contributors on the team include the goaltender Ryan Terrian, who will be graduating soon, according to Szabo. Szabo also believes that everyone on the team has contributed well and hopes to continue the success and build the program in the coming years.
