WSU's social work club dedicated to helping the community

The Social Work Club has existed on campus for over a decade and is currently advised by Jennifer Hughes. The club is dedicated to volunteering, serving, fundraising and donating on campus and in the community.

"Social Work Club primarily finds a lot of different organizations. DayBreak is a local shelter we have. This past November we had a coat drive, and were able to donate a bunch of different coats, gloves, hats and scarves. We do smaller community things on campus that are easy for students to do even if you're not part of the Social Work Club or social work department," said Social Work Club Vice President Dacey Higgins.

Higgins believes the Social Work Club stands out because they have held events in the past to raise awareness about important topics such as domestic violence.

"It's all about putting the question into people's minds and being more aware about some things that are around us every day. It's something we try to do; we try to enlighten people and try to educate people," she said.

Over 20 people belong to the organization, and Higgins expressed her thought that everybody is welcomed regardless of their major.

"As a whole, the unity we have as a department and the university in general – I think that social work is an excellent major and I love the people who are part of it, but I think the Social Work Club really helps break outside the social work department," Higgins said.
