Early this morning on the Central Michigan University campus, a student shot and killed both of his parents in Campbell Hall, a dorm housing building. The student, James Eric Davis Jr. shot his parents upon their arrival to pick him up for spring break, according to police reports.
Davis had been in the hospital on Thursday night for a drug-related issues and he was released shortly before the shooting, according to a Dayton Daily News article.
Davis' parents were identified as 48-year-old police officer, James E. Davis Sr. and 48-year-old Diva Davis. Davis Sr. was a part-time officer in Bellwood.
At the time of the shooting, the school was immediately placed on lockdown and classes were cancelled for the rest of the day. Students were advised to stay in whatever room or building they were in until police deemed it safe to leave.
Police are still searching for the gunman and believe he may be wearing different clothing than initial descriptions that were put out. Articles of clothing were found by police near railroad tracks in Mount Pleasant, Mich., not far from the location of the shooting, according to the DDN article.
The university website's most recent update stated, "The search for the suspect in this morning's campus shooting is ongoing. Officers from multiple police agencies will continue their efforts on campus and in the community through the night. Police remind anyone who sees anything suspicious to call 911."
A motive has still not been released.
A WFLD-TV report stated that Davis is from Plainfield, Illinois originally and in 2016 he graduated from Central High School.
