A local independent movie theater offers a carefully-selected library of screenings for local cinephiles and lovers of foreign cinema.

The Neon, an arthouse theater located on 130 E. 5th Street, Dayton, screens independent and foreign films, as well as some mainstream movies. “Though every film we show might not be for everybody, they are all good films,” said Jonathan McNeal, a manager at The Neon and Wright State graduate.

Audiences at The Neon can expect to see a selection that is different from commercial theaters which screen big budget Hollywood productions that “find screen time, whether [they’re] good or bad,” said McNeal, who has helped steer The Neon’s selection process.

“The films we show have already passed a litmus test for quality, whether that be at a film festival, or through a distributor willing to vouch for their quality,” McNeal said.

McNeal said he is particularly excited about "The Old Man and The Gun," which was partially filmed in downtown Dayton. It premieres on Oct. 12. The film is about Forrest Tucker, a man who escaped prison at the age of 70 and went on to rob a slew of banks, each time leaving the local police dumbfounded in his wake.

"It's not just a film we're booking because it's got a local tie, but it's also a really awesome film," McNeal said.

The Neon also has a dining and drinking area and offers coffee, beer, and wine to customers. For more information and showtimes, visit http://www.neonmovies.com/.
