Wright State University offers a wide variety of organizations, one of which has done amazing work for the community and its members: Habitat for Humanity. This is a nonprofit organization that works to build homes for families in need. Habitat for Humanity is a campus chapter that works underneath, and helps support, the larger organization of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton.
“We’ll help with build sites where we’re actually building the home and working on the construction process. We also go out and help volunteer at the ReStore,” said President Katie Howard. Operated by Habitat for Humanity, ReStores are similar to thrift stores, selling donated furniture, appliances, house supplies and more.
Besides meetings and volunteer services, Habitat for Humanity also hosts different events during the year. Some of which include a food drive that goes toward St. Vincent in Downton Dayton, a hygiene product drive, Project Read in October which collects books for kids in the area and a Toys for Tots during the holidays.
While anyone can volunteer sporadically if they would like, to be an official member, one must volunteer at three events throughout the year. “Once you’re an official member, you get a t-shirt, a certificate, the opportunity to run for a leadership position and bragging rights,” added Howard.
Monthly meetings are held in room 127 in the Medical Science building to educate students on what Habitat for Humanity is, how to get involved and volunteer as well as joining in on team-building activities. If you could not attend the first meeting, do not worry; students, faculty and staff can join or volunteer anytime during the year. All are welcome.
Although the first chapter meeting occurred on Aug. 17, persons interested in joining can attend the next meeting on Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. The best way to get involved is to email Habitat for Humanity at wsuhfh@gmail.com. The first volunteer day will be on Sept. 29.
