Women’s Soccer wins first Horizon League game

The Wright State Women’s Soccer team faced Oakland University for their first Horizon League Conference game of the season, bringing home a 1-0 win. The victory for the Raiders has them starting off league-play strong, despite the recent non-conference losses.

The first half showcased how hard the battle would be against the defensively-strong Oakland team. The Raiders had two shots on goal during the half, but none landed in the back of the net. Oakland also had two shots, with Wright State junior-goalkeeper Maddie Jewell blocking both attempts to score. At the end of the first half, the game was at 0-0.

In the second half, the Raiders defense kept Oakland from scoring yet again, despite numerous attempts. Oakland gained control early, keeping goalkeeper Jewell busy. The Raiders had their first shot of the second half during the 74th minute. Senior Aaliyah Patten put the ball in the net for the Raiders, making the score 1-0.

For the remainder of the game, Oakland fought to tie the score, almost doing so in the 90th minute of the match off of a head ball. The goal was disallowed due to an offsides call. The Raiders won the game 1-0, giving them their first conference win as well as their second win of the season.

The Raiders continue Horizon League play Saturday Sept. 22 when they host Green Bay at the Alumni Field.
