A night filled with entertainment, food, local bands, a silent auction and dance lessons to celebrate the sixth-annual Amigos Latinx Gala.
The gala will be held at Wright State University on Oct. 12. With Hispanic Heritage month taking place from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, the gathering is a perfect way to end festivities.
“We have a strong Latino community in Dayton and they’ve always been supportive,” said Mia Honaker, interim associate director for LANA.
The gala is the top scholarship fundraiser of the year for the Office of Latinx, Asian, and Native American Affairs (LANA) at Wright State. Raising funds to support Wright State students is a goal of the Annual Amigos Latinx Gala, however they’re going to walk away with much more.
The event is described as a phenomenal opportunity to give awards and scholarships to those deserving. The funds raised are used, in many cases, in attempts to help students in need.
Honaker describes instances where students may not have been able to afford their books or have been in a family predicament where a bill couldn’t be met, and the fundraiser has been a saving grace.
“We don’t want to lose a student over a $100 balance,” said Honaker.
The gala is a festive evening filled with plenty of events to keep the night busy. Staff and community member awards are presented as well as scholarship honors, followed by student speakers and the highlighting of recipients.
“It’s a fun evening, as well as a good way to raise funds,” said Honaker.
This black-tie affair is a great way to network with sponsors and carry on student success. The gala is open to all staff, students, alumni and the public with hopes of continuing Tony’s event to help bring awareness to the community.
“Here is our chance to let the community know that Wright State is improving. We’re getting better,” said Honaker.
It’s important for students to have these experiences and have positive take-aways from this event.
“We listen to [students], that’s what this is for. You do matter to the community. We want you to succeed,” said Honaker.
