Compassion in Action: Urging students to make a difference

Compassion in Action is an organization run by Chiemeka Okafor, a third-year undergraduate at Wright State University.

How it got started

This organization officially began in October of 2019 with a spark of inspiration.

In the summer of Okafor’s sophomore year, he was on his way to volunteer at Miami Valley Hospital until a group of homeless people on the side of the road caught his attention.

Normally, Okafor would donate money to those people in need, but that time he thought, “What could I do instead that would be beneficial to a person in the long run?”

From that, Compassion in Action began. The purpose of this organization is to provide aid to local charities and people in need through fundraisers, volunteer events and donations.

“Don’t start a club just to start a club. Rather than creating a surface-level organization, leave your legacy behind for other generations of students,” said Okafor.

Through much diligence, loads of paperwork and determination, Okafor gathered together a small group of students that later transformed into approximately 100 members.

Who can join

Sudents of all majors and backgrounds are welcome to get involved, this has created a diverse group of people with ambition wanting to help others together.

Okafor could not have done it alone. With the help of his close peers, Caleb Black who is now vice president, Emily Ramey the secretary and Danielle Spanbauer who is treasurer, this was made possible.

Events that the organization has put together or attended include the Make a Difference Day at Kettering, Ronald McDonald House charity (in which they successfully raised $1,200,) House of Bread, Dayton Food Bank and St. Vincent de Paul.

There will be more monthly events coming up soon, and Okafor would be more than happy to have even more helping hands come out and support the community.

The next Compassion in Action meeting will be on Friday, March 13, and other events include the next bake sale on Wednesday, March 18.
