Overview of WSU Soccer

Women's Soccer vs. Dayton | The Wright State Guardian | Monica Brutto

The Wright State University fall sports season has finally arrived and with it the arrival of soccer. Here is a quick rundown of what to expect this fall.

Women's Soccer

The women's soccer team is led by second-year head coach Travis Sobers. He led the team to a 5-10-3 overall record with a 3-5-1 Horizon League record.

“It’s about creating the culture and learning what type of group you have,” Sobers said. “It’s important for the seniors to set the tone for what the program stands for both on and off the field and they have done a good job at that.”

Women’s soccer opened regular season play with a 2-1 victory over Bellarmine on Thursday. WSU senior Michelle Rings nailed the game-winning goal in the 80th minute from a free kick.

The team will square off against the University of Dayton on Aug. 21 and Miami University on Aug. 25 before their home-opener against Central Michigan on Aug. 28.

Men’s Soccer

WSU men’s soccer is coming off a 5-10-1 season with a 4-5-1 conference record. Fifth-year head coach Jake Slemker will be at the helm for the team.

Slemker and his team are looking to surpass their successes of the 2019 season. In 2019, the Raiders captured their first ever HL championship and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament.

“Defense was a big priority for us,” Slemker said. “Sometimes, the best defense is a good offense.”

The team will also feature five new transfer students.

“We brought a lot of new faces in the group and it brings new energy to the guys,” Slemker said. “I feel like they have really come together over the last few weeks.”

The men's team will open their regular season schedule on Aug. 25 versus Stetson in Deland, FL.

Following their opener, WSU will face multiple tests on the road against Jacksonville, Akron and Ohio State before their first home game against IUPUI on Sept. 10.
