Local

Sister Act Opens at Wright State University

According to a School of Fine and Performing Arts release, members of the school will begin performing “Sister Act” on Nov. 4, 2022 at 8 p.m.

The show will run until Nov. 20 with tickets still available for each showing.

According to a synopsis from the release, “Sister Act” is a musical comedy that revolves around a “disco diva” who ends up residing at a convent. This clashing of cultures is where the pop-gospel stylings of the music stems from.

Performances will be in the Festival Playhouse, which is located in the Creative Arts Center. 

National

Former Secretary of Defense Ash Carter Dead at 68

Former Secretary of Defense Ash Carter passed away at age 68 due to a sudden cardiac event on Oct. 25, according to a release from the Department of Defense. 

“[Carter] dedicated his long and storied career to fortifying our republic and strengthening what he loved to call ‘the finest fighting force the world has ever known,’” current Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said in a statement.

According to the statement, Carter served under 11 Secretaries of Defense before taking on the position. Carter’s work included fighting to defeat ISIS, strengthening the North Atlantic Treaty Organizaiton, investing in foreign affairs, opening U.S. military combat positions to women and allowing transgender soldiers to serve openly. 

President Joe Biden noted Carter’s achievements as Secretary of Defense, as well as Carter’s personal work to improve the lives of soldiers and later work at both the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and the president’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. 

Paul Pelosi, Husband of Speaker of the House Attacked

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi, was assaulted on Oct. 28 when an assailant broke into the Pelosi home in San Francisco, CA. 

Nancy Pelosi was not in the residence at the time, according to the speaker’s office statement

The assailant was taken into custody and the event is currently under investigation. Paul Pelosi was taken to the hospital, but doctors expect the victim to make a full recovery.

Global

North Korea

North Korea fired ballistic missiles at North Korean waters, just a few weeks after ones were launched towards Japan, according to a release from the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. 

U.S. and Israel relationship

This week, President Biden met with President Isaac Herzog of Israel to discuss global events and strengthening the U.S. - Israel partnership. The two presidents also discussed the pledge to not allow Iran to get control of nuclear weapons. 

Global collaboration for Ukraine

The Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy and the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of the United Kingdom both had a call with President Biden to discuss efforts to assist Ukraine and hold Russia accountable, according to a White House press release
