TEDx Dayton

The TEDx Dayton 2022 Signature Event on Oct. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Victoria Theatre celebrates a wide range of topics including, but not limited to, science, art and culture.

According to the official TEDx Dayton website, the event will also feature Dayton-area artists, dancers and musicians. The main event will be the 14 local speakers that include WSU professors.

Identifying domestic terrorism

Dr. Terry Oroszi, director of the graduate and the chemical biological, radiological, nuclear defense programs at WSU, accomplished author and expert of homeland security, will be presenting on domestic terrorism.

The director’s book, “The American Terrorist: Everything You Need to Know to be a Subject Matter Expert,” with contributions from Dr. David Ellis, culminated Oroszi’s years of research.

“This other book [The American Terrorist], this is what started my research. So, this was out in 2019. What I did is I look at 635 American citizens charged or convicted of acts related to terrorism, and I looked at up to 50 different demographics like marital status, if they went to college and if they were aligned with a domestic group or international group and residents,” Oroszi said.

At TEDx, Orozi will speak about the general makeup of a terrorist and how to prevent terrorism.

“[Terrorists] want to be heroes, and they want to belong to a brotherhood and they like that comaraderie they feel with their people spreading their wings and their bad behavior,” Oroszi said. “What can you do as a community to make it better, to steer them down a better path? Some things that you can do is help them join productive groups, work with them on the resume, be their big brother, big sister, be a friend and mentor.”

In the future, Oroszi plans to continue research on the topic of terrorism.

How we handle our money

Professor of Marketing John Dinsmore researches financial decision-making and mobile applications. National Geographic and Forbes have featured Dinsmore’s work.

Dinsmore applied to be a part of TEDx Dayton a few years ago, but was chosen this year with a new topic. After doing research, Dinsmore discovered an undergraduate project focusing on how people physically react to handling guns. Dinsmore spoke about this inspiration.

“And so I thought to myself, you know, what is a gun about to me, at least to me, a gun is about power. And so I thought, ‘Well, what else is about power and money is about power?’ So I did a study that kind of, I guess expounded on what the gun study was,” Dinsmore said.

According to Dinsmore, this research is connected to instinct and evolution and how those influence current day-to-day lives.

“[Instinct and evolution] are still with us right now, except we live in much different lives, so they manifest in these different ways. So [my talk] is about how those things manifest with money,” Dinsmore said.

Dinsmore will accept the offer to do TEDx Dayton again in the future if given the chance.

Student Arabella Partee is intrigued with Dinsmore’s subject.

“I think [Dinsmore’s presentation] sounds interesting because I don’t know anything about it,” Partee said. “I would like to see it.”
