With over 20 campus events in January, Wright State University organizations provide a plethora of opportunities for students to have fun and de-stress at the beginning of spring semester.
Cultural organization events
The Muslim Student Association and American Medical Student Association will collaborate with the Global Health Initiative and the Asian Pacific American Medical School for a Refugee Tea Party Fundraiser on Friday, Jan. 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m in the Boonshoft School of Medicine. All teas will cost $1, and the organizations will donate the funds to a selected charity fighting the refugee crisis.
For students interested in participating in the Mr. and Ms. Africa pageant, the African Student Union will host an informational about the pageant on Friday, Jan. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. in Rike 160.
The Asian and Native American Center, Asian Student Association, Korean Club and Chinese Club will host Lunar New Year Celebrations on Jan. 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Student Union Atrium and on Jan. 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Culture and Identity Center.
“[The hosts] will have traditional lion costumes, an origami presentation, handouts, snacks from China and Korea, information and many things related to the Lunar New Year from various different cultures,” Chinese Club President Abi Bond said.
Know Your Rights from the Black Student Union, WSU Public Safety and the Student Government Association on Wednesday, Jan. 25 from 12 to 2 p.m. in the Endeavour Room A/B/C will include an informational session on constitutional rights.
Greek Life events
The Fraternity and Sorority Council will host the Fraternity and Sorority Open House on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 3 p.m. in the Student Union Atrium to inform students about Greek Life and how to join a fraternity or sorority.
The council will also host the Chili Cook Off on Thursday, Jan. 26 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Nutter Center. This event will include a chili making and tasting competition, cornhole and other games.
Religious and spiritual organization events
Teams of three will have a chance to win a Rapid Fired Pizza gift card at H2O Church’s Harry Potter Trivia on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Landing.
Mindful Magic, a new organization on campus, will host Introduction to Witchcraft and Folk Magic on Friday, Jan. 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Medical Sciences 125.
“We will be discussing the various stereotypes of witchcraft and defining its true purpose,” President Kaylee Raines said. “We’ll talk about folk magic and its role in helping people reconnect to their ancestry.”
On Jan. 23, the nation-wide tour of worship, preaching, food and more from Carry the Love will join H2O Church, Cru, Chi Alpha Campus Ministries and Catholic Campus Ministries from 7 to 10 p.m. in Apollo Room B/C.
H2O Church and the eSports club will host a Super Smash Bros Ultimate Tournament on Monday, Jan. 30 from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at the Landing.
Homecoming week events
Homecoming week kicks off with a celebration and homecoming court unveiling on Monday, Jan. 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. in Apollo Room A. University Activities Board will provide snacks, hot chocolate and giveaways.
The UAB Battle of the DJs on Wednesday, Jan. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Student Union Apollo Room will include student competitions to see who is the best DJ.
The concluding event of homecoming week is UAB’s Homecoming Week Dance on Friday, Jan. 27 from 8 to 11 p.m. in the Nutter Center Mclin Gym.
Other events
WWSU 106.9 FM will host the Student Media Expo on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 12 p.m. in the Millett Hall Atrium. Students can learn about the opportunities for jobs and internships in WSU student media.
At Tea Tasting and Vision Boards Making with UAB on Thursday, Jan. 19 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Student Union Atrium, students can try various teas with free materials to create vision boards.
“[UAB is] just trying to get people out, meet each other, do something fun and kick off the new year,” UAB director of marketing Ally Smith said.
Miracle Makers’ Miracle Night at the men’s basketball game is on Thursday, Jan. 26 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Nutter Center. Miracle Makers will cheer for the men’s basketball team and collect donations for Dayton's Children's Hospital.
Ski and Board College Night from Campus Recreation is on Friday, Jan. 27 from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Mad River Mountain. The cost is $10, and campus recreation provides transportation with gear and tickets available for purchase at the resort.
