Reds Opening Day
The Cincinnati Reds opened the team’s 147th season on March 30, 2023, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Reds lost 5-4.
“No city does Opening Day like Cincinnati,” a tweet from the Reds' page reads.
State-Wide Remembrance
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine ordered flags lowered in remembrance of the Nashville school shooting victims. According to a press release, the flags flew at half-staff in all public buildings until sunset on March 31.
National
Another train derailed on March 30, 2023. According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, this BNSF train in Kandoyohi County, Minnesota was carrying corn syrup and ethanol when it derailed. The ethanol then caught fire, which led to an evacuation of over 800 residents in the city of Raymond.
“There are no requests for state hazmat teams at this time; however, the State Fire Marshal has sent a fire service specialist as part of a regional mutual aid agreement to provide additional water to help extinguish the fire,” the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Facebook page reads.
Global
During the 2023 Summit of Democracy on March 29, leaders of multiple countries, such as Zambia, the Republic of Korea, Costa Rica, the Netherlands and more, met virtually to discuss democracy for all.
“We must take concrete action, for instance on protecting media freedom and tackling corruption. At this summit we’ll be discussing our efforts and exchanging experiences. But words alone aren’t enough. What matters is what we do next. NL will rise to this challenge,” Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, tweeted.
