With the dog days of summer approaching and fall semester in sight, museums are a great way to cool off and freshen up fun facts. Here are a few art museums to visit in various Ohio cities.
Dayton Art Institute
A 15-minute drive from campus, the Dayton Art Institute is home to a number of famous artworks and exhibits.
The Institute features various special exhibits this summer, including, ‘Van Gogh and European Landscapes,’ which features two of Van Gogh’s works on loan from Switzerland.
Tickets for the Institute are $15 each, but discounts are available for students, veterans, children and seniors. The Institute is closed Monday and Tuesday, with hours from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m on Thursday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Cincinnati Art Museum
A day trip to Cincinnati offers the opportunity to see more museums, including the Cincinnati Art Museum.
The museum features exhibits of African, American, Asian & Islamic, European and Modern art. With a spotlight on Ohio and Cincinnati artists in the American exhibit.
Admission is free to all. Special exhibits are $12 with discounts available for seniors, children and students. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours of 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday.
Columbus Museum of Art
In the opposite direction and to the north of Dayton, Columbus is home to the Columbus Museum of Art.
The museum holds works of multiple eras and mediums both permanent and in special exhibitions. Two special exhibits currently feature photography, including ‘Women Behind the Lens” and “I Hear America Singing: Contemporary Photography from America.”
General admission is $18, with various discounts offered for students, children, and seniors, along with free admission all day Sunday and from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Franklin Park Conservatory
While not exactly an art museum, Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus is home to a permanent exhibit of Dale Chihuly's glass artworks. There are 18 pieces currently on display, set among a backdrop of over 400 species of plants within the botanical garden.
Admission into the conservatory is $22 per person with discounts available for children and seniors. The conservatory is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
