On Tuesday, Aug. 8, Ohio voters turned out for the special election for Issue 1, which would increase the simple majority (50% + 1) required to pass state constitutional amendments to 60%, among other possible new stipulations. The issue did not pass, with 57% of voters voting against the proposed changes, according to the Associated Press.
National
On Wednesday, Aug. 9, wildfires in Hawaii forced evacuations in West Maui and an inland region, according to an Associated Press release.
Hawaiian Electric warned users that high winds might impact the electrical systems in the state. As of Aug. 8, 12,400 customers in West Maui were offline.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green, M.D., explained that emergency crews, including the Hawaii National Guard and Federal Emergency Management Agency, are working to prevent further casualties and respond to the fire, according to a press release from the governor’s office. AP reported that 53 people have died from the Maui wildfires (as of Aug. 10).

The FIFA Women’s World Cup is rearing to an action-packed summit, with long-held rivals going head-to-head and finishing in dramatic fashion.
After defeating the Netherlands on Thursday, Aug. 10, Spain will take on Sweden in a highly anticipated matchup on Aug. 15.
On Saturday, Aug. 12, Australia and France took their game to a shootout, resulting in an Australian victory. With England beating Colombia the same day, the Aussies will now take on their legendary English rivals on Aug. 16.
