A Seamless Transition For Reilly Zegunis

Freshman Reilly Zegunis of the Wright State women’s volleyball team has made an immediate impact upon her arrival this season.

High school → college

After graduating from Zeeland East High School this past spring, Zegunis entered the program this fall as a true freshman hungry for playing time.

Zegunis had a different transition to college compared to most. While competing in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, she had a delayed recruiting process that led to her arrival at WSU.

“My recruiting process was different from all the other girls,” Zegunis mentioned. “I don’t think I was ever worried that I wasn’t going to find a school for me, but it was definitely different than a lot of other peoples’ experiences.”

Zegunis knew once she visited WSU that it was the perfect place for her.

“I came on a visit, and right when I got here, I got the feeling this is where I belong,” Zegunis said. “I called [head coach Travers Green] the next day and told him I wanted to commit. I knew stepping on campus that I wanted to be here.”

A good start

Out of Zegunis’ first three collegiate matches, two were against nationally-ranked opponents in the Cardinal Classic in Louisville, KY. In the first three games, Zegunis secured 29 kills with a .382 hitting percentage. This performance secured her spot as the player of the week in the Horizon League.

Zegunis joins a solid foundation of upperclassmen that have helped make her feel welcome from the very beginning.

“After I got a stuff block [during the exhibition match against Toledo], I could tell they were so excited to see me succeed, and that gave me confidence that I can actually do this,” Zegunis said.

The Raiders are currently 4-6 after playing Butler in the Tru by Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational this week. Their next game in the invitational is against Cincinnati on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. in McLin Gym.
