In Rike 160, the Black Student Union hosted its annual “How to get Wright” session where freshmen are paired up with mentors.
Getting Wright
To start off the event, members of BSU who have signed up to be mentors introduced themselves to the freshmen.
BSU Freshman Council leaders prepared and presented the event. The Freshman Council is there for freshmen to be a part of the organization and get their foot in without doing too much, so first-years can get acclimated to college.
Leah Israel, a sophomore media studies major who is the Freshman Council leader, shared ways to succeed in college, including staying on top of work, knowing how to manage fun and work, using campus resources and building connections.
This was followed by a round of speed dating where freshmen spent five minutes with each mentor. During the eight rounds, freshmen students absorbed the advice from the mentors. At the end, the first-year students got to fill out a form on which mentor they wanted.
Ty Tuck, a junior sports science major and mentor for BSU, wants to help freshmen in any way possible by sharing some mistakes he made and helping others avoid those same problems.
India Hector, junior human resource management and business management major and the secretary of BSU, reflected positively on the event and commented on the amount of involvement.
“Even though it's the beginning of the school year, we've made a lot of progress. To see how many more people are coming to our events and showing up [and] seeing other people involved, it's been really good,” Hector said.
The event had a big turn out with around 20 freshmen seeking advice from peers on how to get “wright.”
