Senior cross country runner Alex McCarty is having another successful season, and he is leading the cross country team with his stellar performances and great attitude.
Performances
In all three meets so far this year, McCarty has led the Raider team, finishing 14th at the Mike Baumer Invitational.
Since then, McCarty has placed fifth and third overall, running a 24:49 at the All-Ohio Intercollegiate Challenge and 24:38 in Louisville on Sept. 30. McCarty’s personal record is a 24:35, which he ran last fall. Through hard work and training, he plans to get back to that point by the end of his senior year.
“He’s a heck of a nice guy.”
Head coach Rick Williamson speaks very highly of McCarty both as a runner and a person.
“He’s a heck of a nice guy,” Williamson said.
Coach Williamson commended McCarty on being a natural born leader with a level head and a great perspective on life. McCarty said that his level head and his calm, confident presence allows him to work on his craft and be the best teammate he can be despite any obstacles.
“He’s improved in every facet physically and mentally,” Williamson said.
To improve times, McCarty has been increasing miles in the workouts, which has led to a whole team improvement.
“The Wright State running program is starting to get recognized,” McCarty said. “In the very near future, we will be winning big meet after big meet.”
The school’s recognition is the result of never-ending hard work and leadership put in by runners like McCarty day in and day out.
Outlook
Wright State has four meets left in the season with the next one on Oct. 13 at Bowling Green.
McCarty is hoping to have a top-seven finish at the Horizon League Championship at the end of the season, getting him on First Team All-Conference. WSU will be hosting this meet on Oct. 28.
Ending the season, McCarty will go on to run track in the spring and finish his career as a Raider; however, McCarty will take with him so many memories and some of his best friends that are on the team.
