On Sunday, Oct. 1, Wright State Campus Recreation kicked off October and Raider Resilience Week with a free disc golf tournament open to all students.
Joining the tournament
Only a Wright1 card and a sign-up to IMLeagues, an intramural sports sign-up platform, was required to play in the 18-hole disc golf tournament.
The tournament, which has never been done before this year, took place on the disc golf course located near the Village Apartment picnic tables. Campus Recreation has a strong history of setting up intramural tournaments in a variety of sports.
“We have done plenty of tournaments, such as darts and cornhole. We do a bunch of leagues as well, volleyball, soccer and flag football,” Sara Golias, an intramural supervisor for Campus Recreation, said.
Any student, regardless of year or major, could join in the fun. Out of 10 registered participants, seven students joined together on the hot autumn day with discs ready in hand.
Event
Most comparable to mini golf, the goal of disc golf is to get the lowest score, which is determined by how many throws a participant makes to get the discs in the course “holes.”
Any student is welcome to use the 18-hole course during the day. This particular event was organized to provide a guaranteed roster of players while providing a fun event for Raider Resilience Week.
Evan Whalen, a senior mechanical engineering major, got into disc golf coming back to campus after the pandemic, and WSU provides an easy avenue to play the sport.
“I knew that it was going to be here on campus, and other disc golf tournaments are kind of far away, and you’ve got to pay to play in them, and this one being free and part of intramurals, it's a good way to meet other people who like to play disc golf,” Whalen said.
Adam Osborn won the tournament and received an intramural t-shirt from Campus Recreation.
This tournament was designed as a one-off event but will return if there is enough interest.
