On Sept. 29, the University Activities Board and ReyRey Cafe gave away free coffee to students in celebration of National Coffee Day.
Embracing the coffee chaos
Coffee. It is the beverage that most college students rely on to help them through each day. The boost of energy provided from the drink can be essential when starting the day, making it through a study session or perhaps even pulling an all-nighter.
UAB members acknowledged and fully embraced the frenzy that surrounds the caffeinated drink on the day reserved to celebrate it nationally.
Students were able to stop by the ReyRey Cafe located in Rike Hall to pick up their iced coffee for free. The cafe offered a Boston Stoker black coffee blend with milk, and students could choose from the wide variety of syrups available to add.
Syrup flavors varied from the classic fall favorite, pumpkin spice, to other traditional flavors, such as caramel, vanilla, hazelnut and dark/white chocolate.
“This event is just to get people socializing, get people coming together, having fun on a Friday, kind of between classes, and they get to have free coffee,” Vivianne Mellon, UAB’s director of campus spirit and tradition, said.
Importance of getting involved
Emelee Porter, UAB director of campus events, explained why she believes students should participate in events on campus.
“I think students should participate because it gets them excited for other events that we’re going to hold. If they see this one thing and they’re like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna keep going to UAB events,’ and it gets them more encouraged to go out and try new things that they want to get involved in,” Porter said.
Mellon also said that participating in events helps students avoid burnout and engage in activities outside of the classroom. Mellon also provided a unique networking perspective.
“Maybe the President is going to come to one of our events, and you could talk to her about things you want to see around campus, or maybe someone that is in one of your psychology classes is coming to an event, and you could find a new friend,” Mellon said.
The two members of UAB also provided their own go-to coffee orders. For Porter, she prefers her coffee to be super sweet with the traditional flavors of either vanilla or caramel syrup. Mellon, on the other hand, prefers a mix of almond and cupcake flavors in her coffee.
“Everyone loves coffee,” Porter exclaimed.
