Brownie in a Jar: UAB Lifting Spirits with Sweets

On Feb. 21, the University Activities Board hosted a Brownie-in-a-Jar event, providing supplies and instructions to make your own brownie mix, sending home instructions for baking them.

Background of the event

UAB holds lots of different social events throughout the school year so people have a chance to meet other people and have a fun way to do it. This is not the first baked goods event they have hosted this year.

UAB held a Cookie-in-a-Jar event before winter break, and it went so well that Emelee Porter decided to have another event before spring break.

“Everyone loves brownies, and people can come relax before spring break,” Porter shared.

The members of the UAB purchased the ingredients themselves, which is why it is so important to RSVP so they can have a good idea of turnout.

Making the brownies

The tables were set up very neatly with all the ingredients laid out. UAB wrote instructions on a white board so it was easy for people to follow the steps.

Lots of attention and detail were put into this event—Porter even made index cards with baking instructions hand written on so it would be easy for people to make the brownies once they left the event.

Students who attended the event left with a jar of brownie mix and a smile on their faces.

“It was nice to get a little sweet treat after my science class,” student Kimberly (Paige) Downing said.

UAB events

The main goal of the University Activities Boards is to make events that bring students together. A great way to learn about future events is from social media.

“I heard about the Brownie-in-a-Jar event from Instagram,” Paige Sitko shared.

Some big events UAB have hosted this year include Homecoming, several movie nights and Winterfest. The way they get bigger turnouts is from reaching more students during larger events, such as these.

“I’ve gone to some of the big events,” Sitko said.
If you have missed out, be sure to follow UAB on social media to see when their next events will be. They will even be hosting another Cookie-in-a-Jar event this semester. Students can learn more about the organization on its Engage page.
