The Raj Soin College of Business organized a professional day on March 19 in the Rike Hall lobby. The in-person networking event provided an excellent platform for current students and alumni seeking employment to connect and engage with local business leaders and explore internship and career prospects.
Benefits
Lance Cauley, career consultant for RSCOB at Wright State University, explained the purpose of events like this.
“We organize many networking events throughout the year to support our mission of ‘connecting people with people and people with resources,’” Cauley said.
This networking program is specifically designed to provide an opportunity for business students to meet with employers that are actively hiring in the region.
“We strategically invite a diverse group of employers that are looking for students of all majors in both undergraduate programs and graduate programs. We are fortunate to have relationships with many local organizations that are willing to engage with and support WSU students and alumni. The program is beneficial to the employers as well because they are able to promote opportunities and brand their organization on campus,” Cauely mentioned.
Employer perspective
Employers also find this kind of event very fruitful. Karrie Penn, talent acquisition specialist from Aeroseal, was one of the many employers present.
“These types of events are very effective for both employers and students because in the big career events, students usually do not get the chance to talk in detail about their interest, skills and experience with the recruiters, but here, they are getting more time to discuss their career interests,” Penn said.
Students seized the opportunity to engage with recruiters, submitting their resumes to companies that were recruiting interns for both the upcoming summer and subsequent semesters.
In terms of shortlisting resumes, Courtney Miller, recruiting coordinator of Reynolds & Reynolds, had a few comments.
“While shortlisting the resumes, we try to look at what opportunities we have for that candidate according to their skills. It does not matter what post they are applying for, we try to make room for them in our company according to students skills and experiences,” Miller said.
The business-to-student interactions proved mutually beneficial, facilitating companies in securing their desired workforce while offering students valuable exposure to potential internship opportunities.
Student takeaway
Barsha Majhi, a graduate student of Marketing Analytics and Insights, was one of the many attendees of the event.
“I really find this program very interesting and helpful. I am talking with the recruiters directly and getting information regarding how I can prepare myself for internships or full-time jobs,” Majhi said.
Overall, the day was full of valuable experiences for students and employers alike. For more information about opportunities like this, visit the Wright State Career Services website.
