Israel orders Al Jazeera to close its local operations
On Sunday, May 5, Israel ordered local offices of Qatar’s Al Jazeera news network to close, escalating a long-running feud between the network and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hard-line government, according to the Associated Press.
The order, which includes confiscating broadcast equipment and blocking its website, is believed to be the first time Israel has ever closed down a foreign news outlet. The network has reported the Israeli-Hamas war nonstop since Oct. 7 and has maintained 24-hour coverage in the Gaza Strip.
