Local 

Wright State Baseball earns top seed in HL Championship 

On Saturday, May 18, the bracket for the 2024 Horizon League Championship was released, according to the Horizon League Official Website. Wright State will host the Championship after securing the regular season title and No. 1 seed with a win over Northern Kentucky. 

The tournament will begin on Wednesday, May 22, and will continue until a champion is crowned on Saturday, May 25. Wright State will begin playing on Thursday, May 23 at 11 a.m.

National 

Millions without power in Houston

On Friday, May 17, thunderstorms with hurricane-force winds tore through Houston, causing power outages for millions and killing at least seven people, according to the Associated Press. The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado with peak winds of 110 mph touched down near the northwest Houston suburb of Cypress in Harris County. 

As Houston works to clean up the damage, they are facing a smog warning and scorching temperatures that could pose health risks. Officials warn crews and residents not to overexert themselves in the cleanup process. 

Global 

Slovakia’s prime minister shot multiple times in attempted assassination

On Wednesday, May 15, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot multiple times while greeting supporters after a political event, according to the Associated Press. Fico has undergone multiple operations and remains in serious condition. 

Slovak authorities charged a man Thursday with attempting to assassinate the prime minister, saying he acted alone in the politically motivated attack. 

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisikilled in helicopter crash

On Sunday, May 19, a helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, the governor of Iran’s East Azerbaijan province and other officials crashed, according to the Associated Press. Raisi, Amirabdollahian and others have been found dead at the site of the crash after an hourslong search through a foggy, mountainous region of the country’s northwest, state media reported. 

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say in the Shiite theocracy, quickly named a little-known vice president as caretaker and insisted the government was in control.
