Ohio police officer shot and killed in ‘ambush’

On Saturday, May 11, Officer Jacob Derbin was shot and killed after being “ambushed” while answering a disturbance call, according to the Associated Press. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost posted photos online of the 24-year-old suspected of ambushing the officer and the vehicle being sought.

Governor Mike DeWine ordered the U.S. and Ohio flags to be flown at half-staff.

Roger Corman dead at 98

On Thursday, May 9, Roger Corman, the “King of the Bs” who helped create low-budget classics such as “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Attack of the Crab Monsters”, has died, according to the Associated Press. He was 98-years-old. 

His wife and daughters released a statement on Saturday. 

“He was generous, open-hearted and kind to all those who knew him,” the statement said. “When asked how he would like to be remembered, he said, ‘I was a filmmaker, just that.’” 

Global 

Northern Lights visible across the Northern Hemisphere

On Friday, May 10, an unusually strong solar storm hit Earth, allowing for the Northern Lights to be seen across the Northern Hemisphere, according to the Associated Press. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a rare severe geomagnetic storm warning when a solar outburst reached Earth earlier than expected on Friday. 

This storm posed a risk for high-voltage transmission lines for power grids and satellite disruptions, which could disrupt navigation and communication services for days after the storm.

Israel orders new evaluations in Gaza

On Saturday, May 11, Israel ordered new evaluations in Gaza’s southern city of Rafah as it prepares to expand its military operations, according to the Associated Press. The United Nations has warned that the planned full-scale Rafah invasion would further cripple humanitarian operations in the region. 

U.S. President Joe Biden has said he won’t provide offensive weapons to Israel for Rafah and he believes that Israel had breached international law that protects civilians.
