A.I. vs. Real: Wright State’s Campus

The Wright State Guardian | A.I. Generated Image

Using Canva’s Free A.I. Image Generator, six prompts were created to test the accuracy of A.I. compared to real photos around Wright State’s campus.

1. Rowdy at a Basketball Game

Guardian-AI-article-1000x1000

Unlike our beloved gray wolf, this A.I. rendered Rowdy is creepy and confusing. The off-brand Rowdy is a bear-like animal. The upper half of the mascot is brown, but its legs are blue, which is confusing.

Additionally, the new mascot is sporting blue and yellow colors, not Wright State’s green and gold. Overall, the mascot is a terrible rendition of the real Rowdy.

2. Wright State Alumni tower

Guardian-AI-article-1-1000x1000

Located between the Student Union and the Neuroscience Engineering building, Alumni tower serves as a physical tribute to graduates.

The landscape in the A.I. image is similar to the actual tower. However, the height, color and lack of arches is nowhere close to the actual structure.

3. Wright State Turning Points sculpture

Guardian-AI-article-2-1000x1000

Commonly referred to as  B.A.R.T., turning points is the iconic red sculpture that sits in the middle of campus.

A.I. was prompted with the official name, resulting in a metal twisted sculpture sitting in the middle of campus. Despite not having the right color or size, It's not too far off our actual landmark.

4. Wright State University Library

Guardian-AI-article-5-1000x1000

Wright State’s library features four levels with open balconies overlooking level two. In the middle of level two, hangs a replica of the 1903 Wright Flyer.

Although, the A.I. rendered image is missing the iconic replica, the image is eerily similar to the actual building.

5. Wright State Honors Dorm

Guardian-AI-article-6-1000x1000

Built in 2005, the honors dorm has six floors with single and double room accommodations, a dance studio, a laundry room, a fitness center and the Raider mart.

A.I. created an image that has rows of bunk beds in an open hallway, which is unrealistic and quite ridiculous.

6. Wright State University Student Union

Wright State’s Student Union was built in 1969. It houses the campus bookstore, the main dining hall, campus recreation, Student Legal Services, Student Involvement and Leadership offices and more.

While the colors and open atrium of the A.I. image is quite spot on, there are too many windows and a lack of gym equipment to be like the real Student Union.
