Getting Involved on Campus: How and Why

Now that the new school year has started, many Wright State University students are looking for ways to feel more connected to campus or find ways to meet more people. For many, getting involved is the key to both of these things.

What involvement offers

Emma Slade, a senior at WSU, has been very involved on campus since she first arrived in the Fall of 2022. She is currently involved as Vice President of the ‘67 Society, President of First Gen Students, Director of Education for Fraternity and Sorority Council, and is a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and the Commuter Student Association.

“I knew if I wasn’t involved then I was going to end up driving home every weekend, going to class and coming back to my dorm by myself,” Slade said.

She went on to explain that due to her involvement, she has become a better student with higher grades and has made many connections with people.

Slade said that she now feels much more comfortable speaking in front of crowds and that she has become more confident in herself overall.

“I signed up for CPH recruitment before I got to school,” Slade said, when explaining how she found the places she wanted to join and call home. “I also went to orientation and found groups there.”

Finding the organizations for you

Larkin Smith, an Involvement Mentor with Student Involvement and Leadership, has also been heavily impacted by his involvement at WSU.

“Before I got involved, I was a very quiet kid that was super introverted. Now, I am more confident in what I do,” Smith said.

In addition to being an IM, Smith is the lead barista at ReyRey Cafe, Chief Engineer at WWSU and Vice President of Risk Prevention and Wellness for Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity.

“I got a job on campus and found my two best friends in the world. They helped me get out of my shell. Then I went to Phi Tau rush events and got a bid,” explained Smith. “I recommend seeing an involvement mentor, they can help you out. And also get an on-campus job that you love.”

As an IM, Smith meets with students and helps to guide them on what type of involvement is right for them. IMs help with time management and planning based on the student’s availability and interests.

Online resources

Wright State offers a page where students can learn more about getting involved.

“By participating in various activities and organizations, you can enhance your skills, expand your network, and stand out to employers,” University’s website reads.

Engage is a website that lists all of WSU’s student organizations and the events that they hold. Using Engage, students can find all of the events that are being held on campus.

The CORQ app is a way to get Engage on your phone and is easy to navigate. With each event, CORQ will list everything you need to know about the event.
