The Visual Arts League is a student-led organization dedicated to providing a space for students interested in Fine and Performing arts. The group hosts weekly meetings for students to complete art projects and relax from the stress of classes.
What is the VAL?
The Visual Arts League has been around for 5 years now, but the student staff is constantly rotating as schedules change and people graduate.
VAL’s main goal is to provide spaces and art projects for students to enjoy. Although the club is centered around the arts, you do not have to be an art major to join. Mak Goddard, the treasurer of the VAL, shared what she hopes students can take away from the meetings.
“There is no pressure, you can just show up and make whatever you want,” Goddard said.
There is no teaching or lessons at the meetings, the students in charge of the club provide all the utensils needed, and students have full creative freedom from there.
About the event
The club has a big collection of supplies that they have collected over the years. This makes it easy for the leaders to gather supplies and create projects for the club.
The weekly meeting on Sept. 6 was centered around pottery. Goddard brought clay that had been and with the help of Isabella Taylor, another student who attends the meetings, they made small batches of clay for students to take.
“I love art. Anything art-related, and I’m there,” Taylor said.
The event was set up for students to serve themselves. They had calming music playing, and students could come and go, grabbing their supplies, making what they wanted to make, and taking it with them.
Luckily, the clay did not need to be fired in a kiln, making it easy for students to take their art home with them.
Joining VAL
Grace Stiner, a student who attended the VAL event, explained how she found the club.
“I enjoy art, I was looking for a club to join, and I saw the Discord server for the VAL, so I decided to come,” Stiner said.
VAL holds weekly events every Friday at 2 p.m. in Creative Arts Center 335. Students can expect projects such as stained glass painting, pixel art and printmaking at future events.
Students interested in VAL can check out their Engagepage and their discord server to connect with club members.
