The Student Government Association had some changes in leadership leading into the 2024 academic year, including a change in Vice President shortly after their elections. Students are now wondering how this will affect them and what SGA has been up to.

What happened

On July 26, The Student Government Association posted a video on their Instagram formally announcing that the elected Vice President Kareem Khasawneh would be stepping down and a new Vice President would be taking his place.

“Sometimes in life, things come about your way that change your pathway a little bit,
Khasawneh explained.

Khasawneh stepped down from his role of Vice President due to life changes and opportunities.

In the video they announce the new Vice President Misker Dressie.

“I have confidence in both Marwah and Misker. I’ve worked closely with her for years and I’m confident in her abilities as a president,” Khasawneh said.

With these changes, how will it affect SGA as a whole?

Recent meetings

SGA had a rough start to the year with scheduling meetings and leadership changes. Their first publicly announced meeting was held on Sept. 17, however there was not much on their agenda.

Despite the setbacks, the Oct. 1 SGA meeting went fairly smoothly and was quite productive. The meeting focused on new and old issues around the University.

Director of Academic Affairs Shyla Koons reported on the effects of the new faculty workload, which was implemented at the start of the semester.

“Something I have noticed is the new workload rules mostly affect research and development. I am currently looking into how we can assist faculty in these areas to support growth,” Koons wrote in the meeting agenda.

Regular attendees claim that it was business as usual for SGA. Grace Anspach, a human resource management major, is one of these attendees.

“I go to these a lot, [and] I haven’t really noticed a significant change. I took a second to get things going this year, but I feel like that is to be expected. I think this year will go great,” Anspach said.

There were several things discussed throughout the meeting. Student events and potential resolutions, but one thing is for sure, the SGA is still committed to putting students first.

“I look forward to serving our student body and carrying the title of Vice President,” said Dressie, “I’m excited to move forward and help make positive change for our Raiders.”

SGA will hold weekly meetings at 8 p.m. on Tuesdays.
