Four Movie and TV Show Inspired Halloween Costume for 2024

2024 Halloween Costumes | Graphic by Abigail Abbott | The Wright State Guardian

Halloween is fast approaching, and no matter what anyone says, there is no age limit on costumes. For students, the big concerns about dressing up are time and money. Below are four fun costume ideas that will not require you to have much of either.

Lydia Deetz

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” the long-awaited sequel to a classic Tim Burton film, grossed $375 million after its release in September– according to RollingStone– and resurrected many fans’ love of the original movie.

Although Lydia Deetz, portrayed by Winona Ryder, had more screen time in the 2024 film, she has long been a pop-culture icon due to her distinctly goth attire and many memorable quotes.

For those who want to celebrate her return to the big screen, dressing as Lydia may be just the thing. Spirit Halloween sells a licensed version of Lydia’s red wedding dress from the original “Beetlejuice.”

For a more budget-friendly option, just dig up an all-black outfit, black hair dye, and a Nikon camera that doubles as a convenient way to capture this year’s Halloween memories.

Dipper and Mabel Pines

“Gravity Falls,” while technically a kids’ show, amassed fans of all ages with its compelling plot and summertime nostalgia when it first aired in 2012. Since its finale after a two-season run in 2016, the show’s fanbase has continued to grow.

In 2024, the creator published a new work of “Gravity Falls” media, “The Book of Bill,” revitalizing this loyal fanbase, says Cami Seymore from The Post.

The two main characters, Dipper and Mabel Pines, both make for fairly simple yet distinctive costumes.

Although it may be ideal to have the blue hat Dipper wears on the show, all you really need to recreate his look are a red shirt, a blue vest, shorts, and any touristy-looking baseball cap.

For Mabel, scour some thrift stores for an adorably tacky sweater, add a skirt and headband, and you’re all set.

Coraline Jones

“Coraline” is a well-loved film this time of year. Over the summer, it was re-released in theaters for its 15th anniversary, drawing in many excited fans.

Enough people turned out to watch “Coraline” earlier in 2024 that it’s already coming back to theaters, just in time for Halloween.

The plucky title character, Coraline Jones, has a memorable but easily replicated look. All you really need are a yellow raincoat, rain boots, and blue hair, which can be obtained with a wig or some dollar-store hair dye.

Bonus points for sporting a dragonfly hair clip, a key on a necklace or painted-on button eyes, but these are not necessary.

What better way to spend a chilly October day than dressed as Coraline while seeing “Coraline” in theaters?

Deadpool and Wolverine

“Deadpool and Wolverine” came out in July, and it has since proved a highly praised hit among Marvel fans, with a stellar 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is also the second-highest-grossing film of 2024.

The title characters, Deadpool and Wolverine, are both fun, well-known figures in their own way. As such, they make for a good two-person costume that does both parties justice.

If you and your friend or partner want to dress as this memorable duo without purchasing the full-body costumes, there are a few routes you can take.

Spirit Halloween sells licensed Deadpool and Wolverine masks for $19.99 each. These will make you instantly recognizable separately or together.

A cheaper option is to simply dress in the characters’ colors, red and black for Deadpool and yellow and blue for Wolverine, and wear matching necklaces to let everyone know who you are.

Halloween costumes are not just for kids or people with lots of time and money on their hands. With a little creativity, you too can add some well-deserved whimsy to your Halloween season.
