Weirdest Scholarships | Graphic by Rose Taylor | The Wright State Guardian
With thousands of scholarship options for students to apply to, there are bound to be some that are downright weird. From scholarships for fans of pumpkin spice to Taylor Swift, here are seven of the weirdest scholarships.
1. Zombie Apocalypse Scholarship
Imagine Wright State University has been taken over by a horde of zombies, intent on eating more than the Union Market buffet. This is what the Zombie Apocalypse Scholarship implores you to envision, awarding $2,000 to the best plan to survive when your school is overrun.
No minimum GPA or recommendation letters are required.
2. STARFLEET Scholarships
Not a fan of zombies? There are scholarships for the more geeky type too.
Live long and prosper with the STARFLEET Scholarship, hosted by an organization connecting Star Trek fans in local chapters. One or more recipients receive the $1,000 prize with the simple application requirement of having been a member for one or more years.
3. Collegiate Beef Advocacy Program
While an unusual topic for a scholarship, this scholarship offers serious assistance for those looking to break into the beef industry. “Bridging the gap between the farm and the fork,” three students will be selected for $2,000 and serve a term on the Collegiate Beef Advocacy Program team, traveling the nation for one year.
4. The Asparagus Club Scholarship
Beef not for you? Try vegetables instead. The NGA Foundation has awarded over $1 million in scholarships. This year, five eligible applicants seeking careers with independent grocers will be awarded $5,000.
A minimum 2.5 GPA is required along with a listed major in undergraduate or graduate studies.
5. 1989 (Taylor’s Version) Fan Scholarship
Exactly $1,989 is waiting for the right Taylor Swift superfan.
Any swiftie who felt moved by the 1989 album in any GPA or education level is eligible. All they have to do is write about 1989 songs that resonated with them.
Bold.org has hosted other Taylor Swift-themed scholarships in the past, so be on the lookout.
6. Pumpkin Spice Fan No-Essay Scholarship
October is upon us, and you know what that means. Midterms? No, it is all about pumpkin spice.
A single winner will receive the $500 scholarship. Any education level is eligible to gush about their favorite sweet treat, recipe or coffee order. This is another one of Bold.org’s “weird” scholarships.
7. Mycological Society of America Scholarships
Fungus, spore and mushroom lovers rejoice! The Mycological Society of America offers two $2,000 graduate awards and a $500 undergraduate research award.
Students may apply between February and November of each calendar year, perfect for biology majors with unique interests in fungi.
There are scholarships out there for everyone, even some that require almost no effort, either. If you are a college student looking to save some money, there is certainly a scholarship out there for you.
