On Thursday, Sept. 19, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority “poodles” hosted their Pie a Poodle event to raise money for their organization, events and service projects.

The organization

According to their website, Sigma Gamma Rho was founded on November 12, 1922 at Brown University in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The sorority was founded by seven young educators: Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian Irene White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford, Bessie Mae Downey Rhoades Martin and Cubena McClure

This organization strives to bring strong women together to represent service, sisterhood and scholarship. They really emphasize service in their slogan, “Greater service, greater progress.”

Some of their larger projects throughout the year include Swim 1922, Project Cradle Care and Operation Big Book Bag. Along with these service projects, they also host a lot of on-campus events.

Outside of service, Sigma Gamma Rho hosts national and regional events, such as conferences, for its dedicated members to plan for the future and grow as both individuals and an organization.

The fundraiser

The Poodles hosted their “Pie a Poodle” event to help raise money to support their organization. Proceeds will assist the club in funding their regional conference trips and upcoming community service events, as well as help fund campus events hosted by Sigma Gamma Rho.

Pie a Poodle was hosted on the Quad at Wright State University's main campus. At the event, students, faculty or anyone walking by could purchase one pie for $1, two pies for $5 or five pies for $10. They could then pie the sorority member of their choice.

The future

Roberta A Cornist-Bordeneau is a WSU undergraduate student studying entrepreneurship. She serves as the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Vice President and is a student trustee for the foundation.

“We have a lot of upcoming events throughout the semester, including our grad chapter events, that you won’t want to miss,” said Cornist-Bordeneau.

Cornist-Bordeneau explains that Sigma Gamma Rho has many events planned throughout the semester for the students at WSU. They hope to continue to grow their organization both on campus and regionally.

You can follow their Instagram @xixi_poodles or check their Engage page to keep up with all of the big things happening.

Sigma Gamma Rho’s next big event is their bake sale, happening on Tuesday, Oct. 9 in the Student Union. Be sure to stop by for a sweet treat that is for a good cause!
