Student Opinions: The Best Way to Celebrate Halloween

On Tuesday, Oct. 22, students were interviewed outside of the Student Union about their plans for Halloween. The students stopped to share their feelings and had a variety of experiences and thoughts on the upcoming holiday.

Plans

Ellie Engle, a sophomore at Wright State University, was eager to share her feelings about Halloween.

“I'm dressing up as a cat, but it's like a couple's costume, and so my boyfriend is Puss in Boots, and I'm Kitty Softpaws,” Engle said.

She also explained that for a previous Halloween event she attended, she dressed as a pirate, and she is wearing the same black dress for her upcoming couple’s costume, too.

Isaiah Edmond is a sophomore majoring in sports medicine and a loving older brother.

“I enjoy Halloween. I enjoy my siblings dressing up and eating candy,” Edmond said. “I love to see the joy on their faces.”

Edmond shared that his sister will be dressing as Sophia the First, and that he will be trick-or-treating with her. If she wants him to, he is willing to dress up to coordinate with her.

Teylor Meyer, a sophomore nursing major, looks forward to Halloween and is considering dressing as Princess Leia from Star Wars.

“My plans are just to go back to my hometown and pass out candy with my parents. Keep it very chill,” Meyer said.

New traditions

Ishwar Prasad Guragain, a physics major and international student from Nepal, has not yet participated in any Halloween festivities and knows little about the holiday.

“I don't know much more about Halloween, but, [I] at least think I'm excited to see what will happen on Halloween,” Guragain said.

Muslima Begum is an international student from Bangladesh who participated in some Halloween festivities this year.

She described a pumpkin carving contest that she partook in with WSU’s psychology department.

“[I] enjoyed the moment…and thinking out [of the] box like this. Then we can show [off the] pumpkins,” said Begum.

Favorites

When asked why she liked Halloween, Engle shared that she loves the “vibes” and enjoys movies such as “Hocus Pocus.”

“It's just one of the other holidays that is kind of, it's not goofy, but you can relax more with, like, the traditions, and it's just fun. And I know a lot of people that take it more seriously because it's with different religions and stuff, but for me, it's just kind of like, oh, I get candy and I get to dress up and be fun,” Engle said.

Halloween’s chill nature and the ability to tune into fun movies seem to be the main reasons why students enjoy Halloween as much as they do.

“I know ‘Scream’ is, like, really popular, but I just saw ‘Scream’and I really enjoyed it,” Edmond said.

“‘Hocus Pocus’ is the number one Halloween movie. Don't even play with me right now,” Meyer remarked. ‘Scream’ is a classic. You gotta watch that every year. And any Stephen King movies, you know, [like] ‘It.’”

Meyer also shared some of the other aspects of Halloween that she enjoyed: the candy.

“So my favorite to eat [is] the banana Laffy Taffy. I love how they taste like soap a little bit. They're kind of fake-tasting, and they're my favorite things ever,” Meyer said.

No matter the reason, all the students surveyed were excited about the upcoming holiday of Halloween.
