The Wright State University women's soccer team hosted Cleveland State University for their third conference match of the season on September 29.
Before the match
Coming into the match on Sunday, the raiders held a 0-1-1 record for their conference matches.
Before this match the women's soccer team hosted Milwaukee resulting in a 0-3 loss. Last season the raiders faced Cleveland State in their second to last conference game, this game ended with the raiders taking a 1-3 loss. Sunday’s match would showcase the improvement of the women's soccer team.
The match
Starting off with the first half, the raiders were able to put a few shots on the goal, however Cleveland State Goalie Elyse Broderick put up a good fight to block them.
Both teams were fighting hard to get the first goal of the match, but in minute 15 Cleveland State scored their first goal.
The raiders were now down by one but this did not stop them from working hard and ensuring they scored a goal of their own. Throughout the first half both teams were taking more shots on each end of the field.
Moving into the second half of the game, the raiders were feeling confident and ready to take control of the game. Within the minute of the first half, Caitlin Burger, assisted by Addy Canter, scored evening out the board.
“I made a hard run into the box and was able to create a deflection in order for Caitlin to then get the shot off,” Canter stated.
Finally putting a point on the board, the girls were pumped and working even harder to secure a win for the team.
“After scoring the goal, my mindset changed, and I knew we needed to score more in order to put Cleveland State on their heels,” Burger said.
During the second half CSU scored another goal, however within the same minute Samara Nunn was able to secure a second goal for the raiders. With the score 2-2 both teams were pushing to come out on top.
Throughout the game both teams were playing aggressive and energetic, which resulted in fouls, and free kicks for both teams.
With only five minutes left of the game and lots of dedication to score and keep the upper hand. Olivia Stroud was able to secure the Raiders third and final goal of the match in minute 85.
“My coach told me to take a shot next time I had the opportunity, so I did; and I was really happy I found the back of the net,” Stroud commented.
With Stroud securing this third goal, the Raiders were able to come out on top and have a winning match ending in 3-2.
Where the raiders stand now
Following the 3-2 victory, WSU moved onto 3-7-1 in their overall season and 1-2-1 in the horizon league. With only a few conference games completed Wright State now sits in fourth place behind Oakland. After the match the Raiders traveled to Youngstown State, closing their week with a 0-1 loss.
The Raiders will travel to Detroit Mercy to go head to head on October 10 at 7 p.m. before returning home for another conference match against IU Indy.
