Halloween Bake Sale for a Cause

On Monday, Oct. 28 and Tuesday, Oct. 29, the C.J. McLin Jr. Scholars Association set up outside the Hangar to sell baked goods. Proceeds from the sale went to For Love of Children or FLOC, a nonprofit that serves Dayton’s children in need.

Halloween bake sale

The two-day bake sale offered a variety of treats, including brownies, cookies and chocolate-dipped pretzel sticks. Even better, each item only cost $1.

From late morning to early afternoon, students entering or leaving the Hangar stopped to learn more about the table full of treats.

Club members at the table were friendly to passersby and answered any questions they had about pricing or donations.

Among these members was Yasmeen Razi, secretary and co-marketing coordinator of the C.J. McLin Jr. Scholars Association. She deemed the event a success.

“We sold most of our treats and gathered donations for a good cause,”  Razi said.

C.J. McLin Jr. Scholars Association

The C.J. McLin Jr. Scholars Association is named after C.J. Mclin, a civil rights activist who helped establish the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State. Scholars Association members aim to improve themselves personally and professionally through service events, fundraisers and activities.

Quan Zhong and Jennifer Lobo are co-advisors of the Scholars Association and believe in its power to positively impact students.

“Scholars form a caring and supportive community where they grow to be active leaders, making a meaningful impact in their communities,”  Quan said.

She stated that members organize events and form connections with community leaders, enabling them to develop the skills of a successful leader. They also participate in community service as a way of giving back.

One community service opportunity for members is helping out at FLOC. Scholars Association members regularly visit the FLOC Arts and Crafts Center to participate in creative activities, most recently pumpkin painting, with the kids.

From fundraising bake sales to community service, the C.J. McLin Jr. Scholars Association consistently supports FLOC and its mission.

For Love of Children

FLOC is a volunteer-run organization located in downtown Dayton. They have 17 programs in place, among them the Arts and Crafts Center, to serve neglected, abused and foster children in the greater Dayton area.

“FLOC serves over 10,000 children in southwestern Ohio,” stated FLOC board president Beth Mann.

Mann added that all donations go directly to supporting underserved children.

Those interested in supporting FLOC via donations or volunteer work may visit the FLOC website or call them at (937) 223-3562.

The C.J. McLin Scholars Association will host their Thanksgiving bake sale on Nov. 18 and 19.
