Marvel Studios Releasing 9 Projects in 2025: Mistake or Not?

As we get closer to entering 2025, Marvel Studios has revealed that they plan on releasing nine projects: three movies in theaters and six television series for Disney +, all within the span of 12 months.

Movies

Marvel Studios plans on releasing three movies next year. They will begin their movie haul in February with “Captain America: Brave New World.” This movie is set to officially introduce Sam Wilson– played by Anthony Mackie– as the new Captain America after Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers retired at the end of “Avengers: Endgame.”

Next, they have “Thunderbolts*” in May, which many are comparing to Warner Bros.’ “Suicide Squad,” in that the movie is set to feature a team of anti-heroes, led by Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, who seek to redeem themselves.

The long-awaited return of Marvel’s first family, the Fantastic Four, arrives in July with “The Fantastic 4: First Steps,” directed by Matt Shakman, who also directed the widely successful television series, “WandaVision.”

The film is being set up as another film in the Multiverse, where the titular team is learning how to adjust to their new abilities while also fighting crime.

Television

Marvel plans to open the year with “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” in January. The series will be animated, and it looks like it will tell the story of Peter Parker as he began his career as Spider-Man.

Next, they have “Daredevil: Born Again,” beginning in early March. The series is set to reintroduce the character Daredevil, as well as tie into the previous “Daredevil” series for Netflix which ran from 2015 to 2018.

In June, they have “Ironheart,” which will expand on the story of Riri Williams, a character introduced in the film, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” where she quickly set up her own reputation as the “new” Tony Stark, aka Iron Man.

Next, in August, they are premiering another animated series titled “Eyes of Wakanda.” The series, according to sources, will be a spin-off set in the world of the “Black Panther,” as the “Wakandan War Dogs” look for artifacts made of vibranium, the highly durable substance that makes up Captain America’s shield.

In October, right around the Halloween season, they are releasing another animated spin-off, “Marvel Zombies,” which will feature zombified versions of many Marvel superheroes. The series will also be rated TV-MA.

Then finally, to round out the year, they have “Wonder Man” in December. The series stars Emmy winner, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, an actor who gets transformed into the titular superhero, Wonder Man.

Fan opinions

Over the past couple years, as Marvel cranks out more and more content, many are wondering if the superhero genre is being too overdone. Wright State Graduate student, Andrew Grigiss, talked about this quality.

“[The] superhero market, in terms of film and media, has become oversaturated,” Grigiss said.

He went on to compare it to the popular social media app, TikTok, in that they both seem to be “swipe-worthy.”

However, Grigiss expressed an interest in the revival of Daredevil because, as he says, the original Netflix show “engaged a lot of human ideas,” which he found compelling.

Some students believe that Marvel has been lacking in quality projects for some time now. One student, Deanna Claybaugh, agrees with this statement.

“[Marvel Studios has] not had a good project since [Avengers:] Endgame,” Claybaugh said. She also chooses to focus on quality over quantity, saying that a, “low project year [leads to] better quality.”

Ohio resident Rachel Roberts expressed her interest in “Marvel Zombies,” because they seem to be trying something new, though she also shows low interest in “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” comparing it to a “broken record.”

When asked about the quantity, Roberts does say that three movies and six television series “gives a good balance between movies and shows.”

Will the high number of projects hurt Marvel Studios’ brand? Or will it be a great strategy to gain extra money and views? Only time will tell.
