The Wright State University women’s basketball team hosted the University of Findlay on Tuesday, Nov. 26. The Raiders have been hard at work throughout the season, coming into Tuesday with a 2-5 overall record.
Coming into the game
WSU entered Tuesday following a 68-57 victory against Ohio University the prior Sunday, taking their overall record to 2-4. WSU would go on to play a tough, fast paced game against the Oilers, losing 65-64.
Despite the tough match, the teams ended with very close scores.
Starting quick
WSU started the game on the defensive side against the Oilers; the other team was putting up a few shots, securing the first points for the game. The Raiders were not far behind due to Macie Taylor taking action and scoring the first 3-pointer of the night.
Both teams were moving quickly to secure points on both sides of the court. During the first quarter, the Raiders were trailing behind by only six points.
The Raiders picked up their momentum and started putting more shots on the board, as well as holding down their defensive side. The Raiders were moving quickly against the Oilers, resulting in turnovers, however the Raiders were not able to catch a lead before halftime, ending the second quarter 33-29, with the Oilers leading.
Number 32, Amaya Staton, talked briefly about the game.
“We just realized the intensity we have to play with and we knew after the first quarter we got to pick it up and we can't remain stagnant, and we know we have to come out stronger,” Staton said.
Coming into the game from halftime, the Raiders were pumped up and ready to work to catch a lead against the Oilers. The ball was moving between both teams, who were putting up shots left and right.
The Raiders had their best shooting in the third quarter, going 8-of-15 overall from the floor. They took this advantage after halftime, tying the score at 33 with driving layups from Taylor, number 10 and number 24, Olivia Brown.
Going into the fourth quarter, the Raiders were leading by two points, 50-48. Throughout the fourth quarter the game stayed close, having neither team hold more than a six-point advantage within the final ten minutes.
With three minutes left of the game the Oilers tied up the game at 60-60. The Raiders continued to battle, lowering the Oilers lead 64-63 with Brown scoring a three-pointer with 15 seconds to spare. However the Raiders fell short, resulting in a final score of 65-64, with the Oilers taking the win.
“You have to have a good start, we didn't start out that well, they smacked us in the face kind of and we couldn't really get back to it,” Makiya Miller, number 3, stated.
Taylor, a returning sophomore, ended the game with 24 points scored for the Raiders against the Oilers. This resulted in Taylor achieving a new high scoring record in her career for a game.
“I love to distribute, get some assists on the board and just share with my teammates and then just let it come to me, but honestly after that loss, I’m reeling trying to give it to the team and be positive,” Taylor said.
Moving forward
Moving forward, the Raiders are preparing for the start of their Horizon League conference games. They will be on the road Dec. 4 for their first conference game against Detroit Mercy.
